GPPS (general purpose polystyrene, also called crystal polystyrene) is a transparent styrenic thermoplastic used where optical clarity, gloss, and dimensional stability matter more than impact toughness. Processors specify GPPS for rigid packaging, housewares, stationery, and display parts that run well on standard injection-molding and extrusion lines when melt flow matches the tool and wall design.

Because GPPS is more brittle than impact-modified styrenics, drop resistance, environmental stress cracking, and hinge life depend on wall thickness, gate design, and use temperature—not resin choice alone. Food-contact, medical, or outdoor applications require grade-specific validation against the intended regulation and supplier certificates.

Economic and environmental value

Economically, GPPS remains a cost-efficient clear resin for high-volume disposable and retail packaging when impact demands are modest, helping converters keep cycle times short and scrap rates low on familiar styrenic tooling. Environmentally, neat polystyrene streams can be recovered where local collection and reclaim capacity exist, but recyclability claims are case-specific and should be confirmed with downstream processors rather than assumed for every compound or multilayer structure.
